Human brain stem glial cells: a novel in vitro model for a neurodevelopmental study.
In vitro models are required to further understanding of the complex events leading to neurodevelopmental disorders. The aim of this study was to characterize a new human neural cell line (hBSG-1) in terms of its ability to form an appropriate cellular microenvironment for studies of neurodevelopmental disorders. The hBSG-1 cell line has glial progenitor characteristics and expresses the neuronal, glial and neural crest stem cell markers nestin, vimentin and p75, respectively. Following transfection with the green fluorescent protein (GFP) plasmid, the hBSG-1 cell line forms GFP-positive (GFP+) differentiated cells which have morphological and biochemical characteristics similar to their in vivo counterparts.
